Frequently Asked Questions - Applying

What should I draw for my application?
Draw something you are looking at in real life, not in a photograph. Try to make it look just like you see it, even if you don’t know exactly how. Think about where you’re placing the parts of your drawing, rather than just drawing one thing stuck in the middle of the page. Draw different things in your two drawings – for example, if your first drawing is of your little brother, your second one should not be of a person.

Do I really have to include two drawings?
Yes, you do. Your homework each week for Ryman Arts will take you 4-6 hours. If you spend six hours on two application drawings, that will be about the same as one week of homework, and will give you an idea of the rigor of our program.

Can I bring the application in person?
Yes. Call the office ahead of time to make sure we will be here. (213) 629-2787.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for Ryman Arts?
If you draw in your free time and are committed to learn how to be a more skilled artist, then you are a good candidate for Ryman Arts.

How can I, as a teacher, help my students get into Ryman Arts?
Make sure they understand the three parts of the application (form, essay and drawings) and review each portion with them to make sure it is complete. Also, write a specific recommendation in the space provided, or even a longer recommendation on an attached letter. While students may turn in a class assignment for one of the application drawings, we will get a better sense of their individual potential if they submit their own work for one or both drawings. Please encourage this among your applicants.

How can I, as a parent, help my teen get into Ryman Arts?
Make sure they understand the three parts of the application (form, essay and drawings) and look over each portion to make sure it is complete. Make sure your teen has the time, space and materials to work on the application drawings. Talk to your child about the commitment of attending Saturday classes and completing homework each week, and let him or her know that you will be supportive of this commitment.

What should I write in my essay?
We want to know why you are applying to Ryman Arts, and why you are willing to take on the extra commitment of a Saturday class.

How do I include a return package and postage?
Purchase an envelope large enough for your artwork (they come in a variety of sizes, you can find them at mail supply stores) and write your own address on it. When you take your application to the post office to mail, leave it unsealed so that you can put the correct postage on the return envelope before putting it inside your application envelope and mailing it.

How hard is it to get in to Ryman Arts?
We have anywhere from 125 to 225 students apply each semester for about 65 openings in class. If you are accepted, you know you are one of southern California’s top art students.
